The Learning Social Media By Doing Course has been put together in response to requests by attendees of the popular Social Media Starter Course for a more practical, hands-on training event.
Designed as a follow up to the entry level Social Media Starter Course, the Learning Social Media By Doing Course is a practical half day workshop that gives anyone new to social media a safe environment to try on the tools for size.
Do you need to Twitter for work? Have you just been nominated company blogger but don’t know your WordPress from your Movable Type? Do you feel overwhelmed by all this talk of trackbacks, pingbacks and Google PageRank?
Then the Learning Social Media By Doing Course is for you.

There are plenty of positives about using social media. I feel that the biggest plus is that social media allows people to keep in touch with, not just friends and family but also topics of interest relevant to them.

Examples of social media

But in my view, there are a few drawbacks:
Information overload – does more information mean that you are better informed?
Expectations to update and keep people informed. Do you have anything important to say (now being a case in point!)?
Privacy issues – not just from a security perspective but from the point of view of switching off, taking time out.
The proliferation of mobile devices capable of managing and transmitting information have contributed to the explosion in popularity of social media tools…? To be honest, I’m flagging a bit here. So instead I googled social media blogs and found this guy’s blog.
Social Media for Museums

Social Media
What do you think are the benefits of Social Media?
To increase the Museum’s brand awareness for demographics that are hard to reach using traditional marketing methods. Social Media is also a great way to bring together the many different events and exhibitions that the Museum offers and can also help us drive visitors to the Museum’s website.
Name some common pitfalls of using Social Media.
Probably the major pitfall that we want to avoid is to start using Social Media, but then to let it stagnate and lose followers/fans. We also don’t want to fall into another common trap of using this new marketing method to communicate in the same way (i.e. tone, language) as we do already using print material etc; instead we want to be able to use Social Media to communicate in a way that is appropriate and meaningful to followers/fans. We also need to be aware that these sites can be attractive to spammers and so need to monitor activity to ensure that it doesn’t damage the Museum’s reputation.
Why do you think it works? Share at least on example and/or success story.

Manchester Science Festival takes place every October with events across Greater Manchester designed to inspire people about science. We use our website, our blog, and twitter to communicate about the Festival. I am keen to find out more about social media to let people know what’s going on and how they can get involved.

What do you think are the benefits of Social Media?
Loads! It’s a great way to communicate with loads of people in real time and get feedback and people responding to you.
Name some common pitfalls of using Social Media.
Finding the time to keep communicating, writing blogs, tweeting etc. Also keeping up with changes and knowing how to link it all together so you don’t have to repeat the work.
Why do you think it works? Share at least one example and/or success story.
I followed some people (potential speakers) on twitter I wanted to get involved in the Festival and then messaged them (I didn’t have their email addresses) to see if they might want to be involved. They messaged straight back and now they are hopefully going to be speaking or delivering an event at the next Festival!

Overview of social media
I’ve been asked to give the pros and cons of social media, along with an example of someone who has used it successfully. Here’s my thoughts:
I’d say the benefits are access to a huge, global cyber community, where contact can be made immediately and the results can be monitored.
